DISC RESURFACING
Discs are made with a silver foiled film which has information encoded within 2 pieces of plastic, essentially sandwiching them together. Similar to the white filling in an Oreo cookie as the foil and the two cookies as the plastic on each side. When a CD is resurfaced, it is taking a layer off, similar to having rotors ground down on a car. You’re essentially buying some time/life on it. Discs can last a lifetime if the are cared for properly. Visor holders, ‘book’ style carrying cases and other holders that store discs in a slipcase or sleeve without the original jewel case are prone to abrasion even on felt. CD’s, DVD’s and games will essentially last indefinitely if they are taken care of. Usually, if a disc isn’t scratched into the foil, it can usually be repaired quite simply.
SCRATCHED DISCS
Here are some basics of what you should know. If you can see ANY scratches that go through the silver foil/underside of the disc and especially if you hold it up to the light and can see light through the scratches or if there are “pinhole” sized holes, these cannot be fixed. However, there are a LOT of cases where the disc will still play skip free once it has been resurfaced. Resurfacing will remove a lot of incidental scratches that may affect the tracking of the laser beam from a player to read a disc. It depends on how bad the scratch is. There is no way to tell until you play the disc. If the scratches don’t appear to go into the silver portion and look like superficial scratches on the plastic coating on the underside, our machines can remove all of those.
TWO SIDED DISCS
Two sided discs such as DVD’s and Dual Discs are much harder to clean as one side typically rests on a machine surface while the other side is being cleaned by the different cleaning elements of the machine. Although it can be done, we cannot guarantee the results of it appearing to look “as new” as one sided discs. At times there can be slight imprints of the cloth that the disc rests on that shows on the reverse of the disc. Although this is will not affect the play of a disc, we feel it is something you should be aware of. Results are usually very good but do take extra time as it takes the time of two discs to clean as there are two sides.
SCRATCH REMOVAL
We cannot guarantee that all discs can have ALL scratches removed. This is literally impossible, especially without seeing it beforehand. We will however, to the best of our ability with the machines that we have, attempt to restore the disc to its original condition. In a lot of cases, the playing side of a disc can have the mirrored appearance it had when it was brand new. In other cases, it will show much improvement with the majority of scratches removed and restore playing ability. For the cost of repairing a single disc, it is much more affordable than buying a new or even another used copy.
BLURAY DISC REPAIR
Bluray discs have a special coating that is very delicate. Only light scuffs can be removed with our buffer. Any scratches that would normally require treatment on our resurfacing machine cannot be removed as the special coating on the Bluray disc will be removed in the process. It is highly recommended that you treat Bluray discs with extra care.
